At MarMar Copenhagen, we value craftsmanship - and the people behind it. Each garment reflects more than the yarn it is made of; it carries knowledge, care, and cultural traditions that have been built over time.
This approach is at the heart of our Fairtrade-certified collaboration with our partner Chola and the Aymara women of the Andes. Through techniques passed down across generations, they knit garments that bring together experience and precision in every piece.

A collaboration based on respect
The collaboration takes place in the women’s own homes, where knitting is part of daily life. This allows them to practice their craft alongside family and community life.
Every stitch shows their skill, and no two pieces are exactly alike. Sweaters, hats, socks, and mittens - each is shaped by years of experience and steady workmanship.
More than clothes
Wearing these knits means carrying something shaped by time, skill, and attention to detail. They are more than just warm essentials; they represent continuity, individuality, and the lasting value of things made carefully.
And of course – they also look great and feel wonderful to wear.
About alpaca yarn
Alpaca yarn has been used in the Andes for centuries. It is known for being soft, warm, and durable - qualities that make it well-suited for everyday use and long-lasting wear. Alpaca contains no lanolin, making the yarn more gentle on sensitive skin.
The yarn comes from alpacas kept in the women’s own households and communities. It is cared for, spun, and knitted into sweaters, socks, hats, and mittens using methods passed down through generations.
Caring for your alpaca knitwear
Like all other clothing, our alpaca styles last longer with the right care:
- Wash gently by hand in cold water with a mild wool detergent.
- Avoid twisting or turning – squeeze the water out gently with a towel.
- Let the garment dry flat, away from direct heat or sunlight.
- Store folded, not on a hanger, to maintain shape.
Making an effort
This collaboration is about creating knitwear that reflects skill and tradition. It is also about recognizing the people whose work makes these garments possible.
When you wear one of these pieces, you are part of a story of craftsmanship - one shaped by knowledge, patience, and the value of making things well.
And that’s what MarMar is all about: making things well.
